Symphony No.2:Lobgesang

Ter gelegenheid van de 400e verjaardag van Gutenbergs uitvinding van de drukpers, en met Beethovens Negende in gedachten, schreef Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy zijn pompeuze Symfonie Nr. 2, met als ondertitel "Lobgesang", waarvan de première in Leipzig in 1840 een geweldig succes werd. Drie instrumentale delen worden gevolgd door het cantategedeelte, waarin Mendelssohn op knappe wijze teksten uit Luthers bijbel en de tekst van de protestantse hymne "Nun danket alle Gott" verwerkt. Jun Märkl, die geprezen wordt om zijn Naxos-opnamen, die "atmosferisch dicht, expressief en prachtig transparant gespeeld" zijn (Pizzicato op 8. 572174 -Messiaen), slaagt erin om met een uitstekend ensemble en het MDR Symfonie Orkest een meeslepende interpretatie te geven van dit ontroerende werk.
