Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No.2/Etudes-Tableaux Op.33

Er bestaan al veel opnamen van Rachmaninoffs Tweede pianoconcert. En dus kunnen vandaag alleen zij die referentiekwaliteit leveren, zegevieren. Het is duidelijk dat Boris Giltburg onbetwistbaar een van de referentiepianisten van vandaag is. En wat Rachmaninoff betreft, geldt dit in het bijzonder, er zijn momenteel nauwelijks spannender, overtuigender vertolkers dan hij. Zijn sensationele nieuwe opname van Rachmaninovs beroemde Tweede Pianoconcert wordt op dit album vergezeld door de voortzetting van zijn interpretatie van de complete Études-tableaux. Nadat hij vorig jaar al Op. 39 van de Études-tabeleaux op een album had gezet, wordt Op. 33 nu gevolgd door een even veeleisende cyclus van Rachmaninovs picturale etudes, die behoren tot het beste wat de laat-romantische pianomuziek te bieden heeft. Met Carlos Miguel Prieto heeft Boris Giltburg een "rijzende ster" in de dirigentenwereld aan zijn zijde. De jonge muziekdirecteur van de Louisiana Philharmonic is een van de meest gevraagde gastdirigenten van deze tijd en heeft in Duitsland al successen behaald met o.a. de NDR en HR radio symfonie orkesten. Hij is ook regelmatig te gast bij de BBC orkesten. Zijn NAXOS opname van Korngolds Vioolconcert werd tweemaal genomineerd voor de prestigieuze Grammy Award.

Samen met het traditiegetrouwe Royal Scottish National Orchestra, dat zijn rang onder de beste orkesten van Europa op indrukwekkende wijze heeft onderbouwd met talloze albumopnamen (niet in de laatste plaats met zijn huidige chef-dirigent Stéphane Denève), biedt dit album een overtuigende bezetting zoals we die voor Rachmaninoffs populairste stuk al lang niet meer hebben gezien.
