Salut d’Amour is een charmant stukje Victoriaanse salonmuziek. Het stuk, geschreven als een muzikale liefdesbrief aan zijn ooit studente Caroline Alice Roberts, aan de vooravond van hun verloving, wordt opgeluisterd door Elgars melodieuze flair. Samen met het andere vroege werk in deze bundel Chanson de nuit droeg het succes ervan bij aan de geleidelijke vestiging van Elgars reputatie als componist. The Nursery Suite was gebaseerd op een aantal vroege composities die Elgar, toen Master of the King's Musick, in 1930 had herontdekt, niet lang na de geboorte van de tweede dochter van de hertog en hertogin van York, prinses Margaret Rose. De acht delen van het werk zijn opgedragen aan de koninklijke familie en bevatten deskundige versieringen van materiaal uit de kindertijd, vakkundig melodisch schrijven en karaktervol gebruik van solo-instrumenten, waardoor gevoelens van nostalgie met een echte charme worden opgeroepen.
