We talk of the nine symphonies of Beethoven and Bruckner but what about the ten of Spohr? Howard Shelley and the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana conclude their survey of his symphonies with two that push the boundaries of the genre itself. Both Nos 7 and 9 are programmatic works, something that Spohr along with Berlioz did much to champion. In the Seventh, titled ‘The earthly and divine in human life’ and inspired by a holiday in Switzerland, he uses not one but two orchestras to great colouristic effect. His Ninth explores that perennial favourite theme of composers from Vivaldi to Glazunov, the Seasons (though Spohr starts with winter rather than spring). As if that were not enough, Howard Shelley also offers the premiere recordings of a brief, powerful Introduzione and a triumphant, at times almost Rossini-ish, Festmarsch.

"Dit is de vijfde en laatste cd van Hyperion in de reeks symfonieën van Louis Spohr. Een man die zich ontpopte als een rasechte romanticus, getuige zijn
aanstekelijke programmamuziek. Als een tweede Berlioz zocht hij naar overkoepelende thema’s die van zijn symfonieën een organische geheel moesten
maken. Bij de Zevende uit 1841 was dat ‘de ontwikkeling van de mens van naief kind tot godvrezend volwassene’ - je moet er maar op komen. Ries gebruikt
de dialoogvorm door het orkest in tweeën te splitsen. Met vraag-en-antwoord spelletjes en curieuze echo’s bereikt hij effecten die bijzonder werden gewaardeerd door Schumann, die deze muziek in zijn tijdschrift aanprees. De Negende is van later datum en heet ‘Jahreszeiten’: van de bittere winterse kou
- pizzicati als ijspegels, tremolo’s als rillerigheid - naar de zomer. Chromatiek doet ijs smelten, houtblazers introduceren vogeltjes, enzovoort. Leuk en onderhoudend. Dirigent Howard Shelly zoekt al decennia lang naar dit soort muziek waar eens de concertzalen voor volliepen, maar die langzaam uit de geschiedenisboekjes is verdrongen. Een verdienstelijk streven, want het verruimt onze blik op het muziekleven uit die dagen. Spohrs vakmanschap - hij was een groot orkestrator - is nog volop genietbaar."
