Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop

Sergei Prokofievs "Vijfde Symfonie", een van zijn belangrijkste en omvangrijkste symfonische werken, werd gecomponeerd in 1944. Bij de première omschreef hij het zelf als "een symfonie van de grootsheid van de menselijke geest" Het eerste deel combineert een buitengewone muzikale kracht met onverwacht expressieve thema's die voortdurend worden ontwikkeld. Het hartstochtelijke "Scherzo" wordt gevolgd door het langzame, lyrische derde deel, dat een dramatisch middendeel heeft dat tot het uiterste wordt opgevoerd. Niet minder indrukwekkend is de finale van de symfonie, waarin Prokofjev herhaaldelijk het vuur van een nauwelijks te onderdrukken passie laat oplaaien

De symfonische suite "Het jaar 1941", net als de "Vijfde" geschreven in oorlogstijd, is Prokofievs antwoord op de Duitse invasie in de Sovjet-Unie
