Kate Royal, Christine Rice, Tuomas Katajala, Derek Welton & MSO Festival Chorus, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Robert Trevino

"Now 35, Robert Trevino was taken under David Zinman’s wing at Aspen a decade ago. He emulates the older man’s Beethoven in ways both specific...and more general: the pointed voicing within and between parts, underlining the often fierce, sometimes playful argument which animates each work and so powerfully differentiates even the First from symphonic predecessors and contemporaries...In other respects, Trevino goes his own way."
Gramophone Magazine - August 2020
"The opening of the First Symphony immediately shows the impact on Trevino of historically-informed performance...The orchestral balance is often heavily in favour of the winds, especially the woodwinds, often at the expense of the strings…The last movement [of No. 7] really does seem inspiredly mad, more than any performance I have ever heard. The Eighth has the mischief and the lurking menace which it rarely receives...All told, this set is very well worth having, and in excellent sound."
